Questions about swim lessons?

My mom is making me do swim lessons. I'm eleven and I don't know how(this is my friends account) and I'm so embarassed I have to go with my cousins and sister and I HATE my mom for doing this. What is the average age people take swim lessons? Will I look like a big loser for not knowing how?
